Haselden Begins Building Research Support Facilities for DOE’s Renewable Energy Laboratory
RSF intended to be prototype for ‘workplace of the future’
CENTENNIAL, CO, May 1, 2009 – Haselden Construction is pleased to announce the commencement of construction on the $64 million, 218,000 square foot Research Support Facilities (RSF) located on the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) campus in Golden, Colorado.
The design of the new showcase structure will meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum rating, the highest distinction given by the council for high performance green buildings. The building is also being designed with the intention of becoming a Zero Energy Building as defined by NREL. The RSF, scheduled for completion summer of 2010, will provide new office space for over 700 employees at the Golden Field Office of the Department of Energy and NREL.
Energy efficient features such as natural ventilation through operable windows, thermal mass, transpired solar collectors, radiant heating and cooling, and new workstation configurations that allow for maximum daylighting are included in the building design. The roof slope has been harnessed as an energy plant through the incorporation of photovoltaic panels, delivering the power needs of the facility. The RSF promises to become a prototype for future highly efficient U.S. office buildings. While the latest energy-efficient technologies are being incorporated into design and construction, the building will be replicable and the cost is in line with traditional office construction.
Haselden is using a new Collaborative Project Delivery (CPD) approach within a design-build contract that will help achieve stringent project goals. It uses the principles of open communication and early involvement by all key players. CPD became the cornerstone for preconstruction, design and engineering efforts on the project. Haselden is collaborating with design-build partners RNL and Stantec on the RSF project.
